In a surprising move that signals an aggressive forward-looking strategy, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced the initiation of a nationwide 6G feasibility study, running concurrently with the ongoing 5G spectrum auctions.

While commercial 6G deployment is not expected globally until 2030, the PTA aims to ensure Pakistan is not left behind in the foundational research and infrastructure planning required for Terahertz (THz) frequency communications.

Beyond 5G: The Terahertz Frontier

5G networks are designed to bring gigabit speeds and low latency to mobile devices. 6G, however, is a paradigm shift. Operating in the Terahertz spectrum, 6G promises microsecond latency and peak data rates of 1 Terabit per second (Tbps)—a hundred times faster than 5G.

“We are currently rolling out 5G to power our immediate industrial needs, but 6G is what will power the true Metaverse, fully autonomous transport networks, and remote holographic surgery,” a PTA spokesperson noted during the press briefing.

Infrastructure Challenges

The primary hurdle for 6G is propagation. Terahertz waves cannot penetrate walls and are easily absorbed by moisture in the air. This requires a massive shift away from traditional macro cell towers towards an ultra-dense network of micro-antennas, potentially integrated into streetlights, buildings, and even vehicles.
